Preparing Students for Financial Success
Access to financial literacy is a vital resource in closing the racial wealth gap that exists throughout New York State. George believes that financial literacy is a critical life skill that builds a strong foundation to a young person’s success in and out of the classroom. That is why he introduced bill A08973 which aims to have public schools implement three semester-long financial literacy courses for public school students between sixth and twelfth grade. These courses will equip students with practical knowledge about budgeting, saving, credit, debt, and personal finance.

Making Higher Education More Affordable
George Alvarez believes that every student deserves equal access to a quality college education regardless of their financial circumstances. That is why he introduced the “New Deal for SUNY” (A00890), legislation that would provide free tuition for eligible SUNY students who are on track to graduate. George continues to act on his support for students facing unexpected financial hardships on bills A06641 and A10288, which establish and expand emergency aid grant programs at SUNY and CUNY campuses. Together, these bills will help remove financial barriers to higher education and ensure that students can stay enrolled, complete their degrees, and achieve their full potential.
